EA FPSO project

Several businesses within the Production Management Division were selected to design and engineer the Integrated Control and Safety Systems (ICSS) solution for the EA FPSO project. The integrated system centres on a number of products: Foxboro’s Intelligent Automation (I/A) Series open industrial control system, Triconex’s Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) critical control system and SimSci-Esscor’s process and training high fidelity simulator.

With around 17,000 input/output connections to the process plant, the integrated system provides process control and information management, together with Emergency Shut Down (ESD) and Fire & Gas (F&G) protection, associated with the hull, topsides, drilling platform and gas gathering systems.  Extensive use has been made of fibre optic communications embedded within the main umbilical cables running between the vessel and the remote drilling platforms. A separate safety network is used as a backup path for the ESD systems throughout.

The solution also encompasses a high fidelity simulator, supplied by SimSci-Esscor.  It incorporates a model of the total process and will be closely integrated with the overall control system to provide operator training, advanced process development and system testing.

The ICSS project team combines the global project techniques and application experience of Invensys and its sub-suppliers, with teams from Halliburton and SPDC (Shell Petroleum Development Company).  This ensures best practice and efficient project execution during each phase of the project development.

The project team, based in Crawley , has successfully eliminated many of the traditional project interface challenges by working in an open joint team environment to ensure the maximum benefits of a combined approach.  Key milestones have been achieved for early hardware delivery and application software completion, to allow fast track site installation and minimum commissioning periods as demanded by the overall project schedule.

Invensys has provided both installation and commissioning support at all the major project work sites (Korea, Middle East, Singapore and Nigeria) using the local technical service centres.

Lifetime systems services include the unique Remote Plus, modem-linked, online system diagnostic and maintenance package.  This service complements the extensive maintenance operation supplied by Invensys Nigeria Ltd, based in Port Harcourt. From this base indigenous service support engineers ensure rapid identification and resolution of potential problems, reduced on-site maintenance costs and minimised travel requirements to support the Foxboro, Triconex and SimSci-Esscor integrated systems.

In addition to local technical service support engineers from Invensys Nigeria Ltd, operator and maintenance training for the Shell operations team will be provided at the Invensys training school in Port Harcourt .
